Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

The most common cause of vertigo.

What’s happening in BPPV:

  • Inside your inner ear are tiny calcium crystals (otoconia) that help with balance.
  • Sometimes, these crystals get dislodged and float into one of the semicircular canals where they shouldn’t be.
  • When you move your head in certain positions, these crystals shift, sending the wrong signals to your brain — causing spinning sensations (vertigo).

Epley’s Maneuver purpose:

  • The Epley’s maneuver is a series of guided head and body movements designed to move those loose crystals out of the semicircular canal and back to their proper place in the inner ear.
  • It’s a mechanical fix for a mechanical problem — usually giving relief within minutes to days.

How can Chiropractic help:

  • Neck and cervical spine alignment:
  • Poor neck alignment, muscle tension, or restricted cervical joints can affect proprioception (your body’s sense of position) and blood flow to balance centers in the brain.
  • Gentle adjustments or soft-tissue work may help reduce dizziness that’s not caused by BPPV, such as cervicogenic dizziness (neck-related dizziness).
  • Posture and muscle tension relief:
  • After vertigo attacks, people often develop neck tightness from guarding their movements.
  • Chiropractic stretching, mobilization, or therapeutic exercises can restore range of motion and relieve strain.
